Soft Tissue Metallosis – Total joint issues
Many of you have probably been seeing patients in your facilities that are
having the condition referred to as ‘soft tissue metallosis’. This is a
form of toxic effects of the metal components of the arthroplasty. When
trying to find an ICD-10 code you will want to have the first listed code the
actual mechanical complication of the arthroplasty in the T84.010+ -
T84.099+ (eg. Instability; loosening; etc). Then the additional code for soft
tissue metallosis would be in the range of T56.2X1+ - T562X4+ Toxic effect of
chromium and its compounds or T56.811+ - T56.894 Toxic effect of other
metals. Then don’t forget the status code Z96.6--. You will however want to
make sure you double check with the given payer/carrier to see if they have a
specific policy or guidelines. Aetna has such a policy at the below URL

The diagnosis codes look all right to me, except I would also use the Z
code for status of total hip as the last diagnosis.

Any one able to help on this one. The patient wound up with metal
particle from the total hip and this caused the synovitis and the complication
code.
